Forest Hall’s Lewis Ritson was an absolute domestic sensation down at lightweight in 2017-18 when he made three British title defences – and thus secured the coveted Lonsdale Belt – in a total of four rounds. Last October, however, improving Belgian Francesco Patera made him look limited, winning their match for the vacant European crown and convincing the 5ft 10in operator to make a belated move up to 140lbs.

In his second fight at the new weight at Liverpool Exhibition Centre, Ritson easily stopped Marek Jedrzejewski of Poland, who had lost two of his last three, in a scheduled 10. Ritson came forward with good head movement, and switched well from head to body. He dropped Jedrzejewski with a left downstairs in the third and the follow-up barrage forced the finish with the Pole trapped on the ropes.

British and European boss at super-lightweight, Robbie Davies Jr is on the Ritson radar and the pair exchanged heated insults backstage after Lewis’ victory. The Kirkby man stayed busy here, dominating Czech journeyman Michael Dufek, who is 36 but could pass for 50, in an eight-rounder. Davies used intelligent footwork and clever combinations to keep his opponent in check. Dufek was reckless and dangerous with the head, but Davies Jr got him out of there with consistent pressure in the third, landing several lefts from the southpaw stance.

Davies Jr began screaming for Ritson after the finish, repeating his “maggot” insult from their earlier altercation, and promoter Eddie Hearn said a fight between them would have to be a WBA eliminator.
