Displaying speed and quickness that most 40-year-olds only dream of, WBA welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao boxed and slugged his way to a wide 12-round unanimous decision over Adrien Broner at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, NV. Saturday night.

The scores were 117-111, 116-112 (twice) for Pacquiao.

Maxboxing judged Pacquiao the winner by 118-110 tally.

As expected, Pacquiao (61-7, 39 KOs) got off to a fast start. He peppered Broner with a few jabs and left hands. Broner, a notorious slow starter, followed Pacquiao, but didn’t punch much. He did land an uppercut.

In rounds two and three, Pacquiao bobbed and weaved. Broner (33-4, 24 KOs) jabbed and landed a right. Pacquiao fired a short hook and left hand. Seconds later he cracked Broner with multiple blows. Broner was trying to be more active, but Pacquiao was busier. His jab was landing consistently.

In this writer’s opinion, Pacquiao had banked the first three rounds. Broner needed to be busier. He landed a left and a right and in round four. Pacquiao connected with a couple of left hands. Broner landed a right at the bell that likely won him the stanza.

Pacquiao went downstairs in round five. Broner connected with another right. Pacquiao worked the body and head. Pacquiao’s jab continued to land. He also popped Broner with a left. Pacquiao upped the ante in rounds six and seven. He dug numerous shots to the midsection. A sharp left clipped Broner’s chin. Pacquiao ate a good pop to the jaw at the bell but was back in control in the next round. His feinting was causing Broner problems. Seconds later, a sharp left wobbled Broner. Pacquiao followed up his advantage with uppercuts and sharp blows. Broner was hurt but survived to hear the bell.

Broner surprised Pacquiao with right hands and a hook in round eight. He was letting Pacquiao know that he wasn’t going anywhere.

Pacquiao landed a counter hook/jab. The blow knocked Broner back. He stalked and rocked in the thirty seconds of the heat.

Broner needed to hurt Pacquiao to get back in the fight, but it was Pacquiao who caught Broner with a shot to the heart in round nine. A big left to the chin also connected. Round 10 saw Broner trying to do more. He jabbed and let fly with punches. Pacquiao took his time and looked for openings.

In rounds 11 and 12, Pacquiao was the busier fighter. He pushed Broner into the ropes and unloaded. Broner did what he always does, he waited. Waiting wasn’t going to win him the fight.

On the other hand, Pacquiao, even at 40, showed that he can still fight at a high level.

“I did my best in the fight,” said Pacquiao. “I thank God for this victory. I wanted to push more, but my trainer said don’t be careless.”

“I beat him,” said Broner.

No he didn’t, not even close.
