Dave Allen has revealed that a loss at this stage of his career would lead to him walking away from the sport.
The Doncaster heavyweight has been a hugely entertaining boxer throughout his career, and has had many ups and downs along the way. He admits himself he is “no world beater” but has never shied away from a challenge.
Across 37 fights, Allen has shared the ring with the likes of Dillian Whyte, Luis Ortiz, Tony Yoka and Fraser Clarke. His best wins have been over Lucas Browne and Johnny Fisher, and in his last two, he has lost to Filip Hrgovic via stoppage in the early rounds, and has since gone on to beat Ross McGuigan on points.
He returns on September 5 against Dublin’s Thomas Carty on the undercard for Katie Taylor’s farewell fight at Croke Park against Flora Pili in front of roughly 80,000 fans.
Speaking to Ariel Helwani, ‘The White Rhino’ admitted he believes he should have enough for Carty, or else he will hang up his gloves.
“If I can’t beat Thomas Carty, that’s the end of the road because then I’m nowhere near as good as I feel like I was before. I’m not saying I was ever a world-beater, but at the level I’m about to box at against Thomas Carty, I should be winning. If I can’t, I ain’t got it no more.”
Carty is 30 years of age and has lost just one of his 12 fights so far, though has not yet fought anyone of note.
