David Benavidez has received plaudits from a legend of Mexican boxing after he produced an impressive win over Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez.
‘The Mexican Monster’ returned to the ring for the 32nd time as a professional on Saturday night as he defeated ‘Zurdo’ in emphatic fashion at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Benavidez made his first appearance in the cruiserweight division, pulling off a sixth round stoppage victory over Ramirez to capture the unified WBA and WBO world titles to become a three-weight world champion.
After producing arguably the best performance of his career to date, ‘The Mexican Monster’ has received support from the legendary Julio Cesar Chavez Sr, who was in attendance in Las Vegas on Saturday night.
In footage shared on social media, Chavez can be seen hugging Benavidez just moments after he was declared the winner over ‘Zurdo’, a touching moment between two greats of the sport from the past and in the present.
It is currently unknown whether Benavidez will continue campaigning at cruiserweight going forward, with rumours circulating about a potential clash with former IBF world cruiserweight champion Jai Opetaia, who is currently signed with Zuffa Boxing.
Failing that, Benavidez is also open to his long-desired showdown with Canelo Alvarez, having targeted the Mexican superstar for a number of years.
‘The Mexican Monster’ called out Canelo after he defeated Ramirez and issued an update on whether he believes he will secure a match-up with the former undisputed super-middleweight champion, while a clash with Dmitry Bivol could be a possibility too.
