David Benavidez has had his say on whether he believes a showdown with Canelo Alvarez will happen in the future.
‘The Mexican Monster’ made his much anticipated return to the ring on Saturday night as he defeated Mexico’s Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez in impressive fashion.
Benavidez stopped Ramirez in the 6th round of their ‘Cinco De Mayo’ clash to become the unified WBA and WBO world cruiserweight champion at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
After conquering yet another division, having previously held world honours at super-middleweight and light-heavyweight, Benavidez appears to still be open for a clash with Mexican superstar Canelo Alvarez.
Benavidez previously stood in line to face Canelo as the WBC super-middleweight mandatory challenger but a fight between the duo did not come to fruition.
Speaking to DAZN Boxing, ‘The Mexican Monster’ admitted that he is ‘serious’ about facing Canelo in the future but is not convinced that the Mexican great shares this feeling.
“I’m serious, I’m serious. He don’t want that fight though.”
Canelo has been out action since last September when he suffered a shock points defeat to former pound-for-pound great Terence ‘Bud’ Crawford in their showdown for the undisputed super-middleweight championship.
The 35-year-old from Guadalajara is expected to make his return to the ring in September, challenging Christian Mbilli for the WBC world super-middleweight title in Saudi Arabia.
