Conor Benn has plenty of decisions to make about where he goes next in the sport of boxing, and has now been offered one route back by a former world ranked contender.
Benn stepped up to world level for the first time in his career this past Saturday night. After a difficult weight cut to get back down to the 147lb level for the first time in four years, he struggled to make a dent in WBC ruler Ryan Garcia and was stopped in the second round.
Benn had already said he would move up straight after the fight because of the weight issue, and speaking to Seconds Out, former lightweight star and Olympic Gold Medallist Luke Campbell has suggested he would be open to a fight.
“If he’s struggling for opponents, I might make a comeback. That’s probably one fight that would excite me and get me the buzz back on, I think. If they want to look into it, the doors open to look into that.”
Back in January 2021 at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas, Campbell fought a fast-rising Garcia for the interim WBC lightweight title.
Although he got off to good start by dropping Garcia and posing plenty of problems early on for the American, he was eventually caught with a hellacious body shot that sent him to the canvas and left him unable to continue.
It was a second consecutive loss for Campbell following defeat to Vasiliy Lomachenko and led him to hang up his gloves. In the five years since, he has become a member of Reform UK and serves as the inaugural strategic authority mayor for Hull and East Yorkshire.
