In the new episode of Seconds Out’s podcast, Dereck Chisora trainer Don Charles explains his longstanding grudge against David Haye
Top trainer and ’heavyweight specialist’ Don Charles, who recently reunited with his most celebrated charge Dereck Chisora to gain revenge over Kubrat Pulev, joined our You Don’t Know Shit About Boxing podcast last week and documented his grudge with former two-weight world champion David Haye. Seven years before Haye, as Chisora’s then-manager, became instrumental in relieving Charles of his training duties in 2019, the pair had infamously brawled in Munich. Haye struck Chisora and later Charles as a huge melee erupted following Dereck’s valiant points defeat to Vitali Klitschko in a WBC title challenge.
"The universe will pay him back for all the things he’s done towards me," Charles told co-host Georgia Banks and I. "That man split my lip and I’m still having surgery to reconstruct my teeth.
"After Dereck had gone 12 rounds with Klitschko, they got into a confrontation. He hit Dereck, I stepped over Dereck to say, ’What are you doing?’ to David Haye. To my surprise... a vicious left hook.
"I’ve developed a lisp because of the work I’ve had done to my teeth. Now, if you’re fighting a person you will brace yourself for if you get hit; I was not fighting this man, he took a swing at me. I ran after him, we tussled, he broke free and grabbed a big camera tripod, swung at me. Adam Booth [Haye’s trainer at the time] pushed me in the chest, luckily I dived out of the way. He hit Adam on the head and cracked his head.
"As a person, he’s not my kind of guy."
On the podcast, Charles talks about his long, roller-coaster relationship with Chisora, the current heavyweight scene and much more.
