Devin Haney boxes and befuddles George Kambosos to become undisputed lightweight champion

With a handful of fans cheering for him, and forty thousand or so not, Devin Haney (28-0, 15 KOs) outboxed Australian George Kambosos to become the undisputed lightweight champion Sunday afternoon at Marvel Stadium in Australia.

 

Scores were 116-112 twice and 118-110.

 

Maxboxing judged Haney the winner by a 118-110 tally.

 

In round one, Haney,23, fired numerous jabs. Kambosos (20-1, 10 KOs) eyed the WBC champion. He countered the jabs with his own left and later a combination. The crowd roared. Haney, using feints effectively, landed a right at the bell.

 

Haney popped more jabs in the next stanza. Kambosos connected with a heavy right. Haney absorbed it. Haney worked some more – Kambosos landed a short inside left hook. Kambosos,28, came out fast in round three. Haney met him in the center of the ring. Haney fired a hook to the body. Seconds later, he landed a combination.

 

Kambosos missed a home run shot. Haney shot a left to the WBO, IBF, and WBA champions nose.

 

In round four, Haney fired a double jab to the head and to the body. Kambosos was finding it difficult to time the elusive American.

 

Haney tagged Kambosos with a left. Kambosos found Haney with a right cross. Haney continued to control the range in round five - connecting with an uppercut. Kambosos fired a shot to the liver. Haney popped Kambosos with more jabs to the face. Kambosos, his face red from eating jabs, fired a hard right that missed in round six. Haney let fly with a left and right. Kambosos countered but ran into a check hook. Haney pumped more lefts in round seven.

 

Kambosos scored with a left but ate a right. Haney was beating him to the punch.

 

Two lefts and a right from Haney knocked Kambosos back a step. Haney had won six of the first seven rounds on this writers scorecard. Haney stepped inside with a left and right in round eight.

 

Kambosos fired two rights that Haney avoided. Kambosos stalked as the crowd roared.

 

Haney scored with an inside hook and a right hand in round nine. Kambosos fought back. Haney kept boxing. Kambosos loaded up, but whiffed.

 

Kambosos left eye was red and swelling. Haney jabbed and jabbed in round 10. Kambosos worked the body. Haney’s left continued to be on point.

 

Haney bounced and boxed in round 11. Kambosos tried to make something happen but could not.

 

In the 12th and final round, Kambosos had three minutes to do something dramatic. Haney moved and popped his left stick.

 

Kambosos fired. and missed.

 

Haney did not.

 

The fight was his.
