David Haye thinks there is one man Oleksandr Usyk needs to fight before finally hanging up his gloves.
Usyk is regarded as one of the best heavyweights to ever do it. After winning a gold medal at the Olympic Games in London in 2012, he took four years to clean out the cruiserweight division and become undisputed.
He then moved up and did the same in the heavyweight division with two wins over Anthony Joshua, Tyson Fury and Daniel Dubois, making him the first ever two-time undisputed ruler in the four-belt era.
This weekend, he takes on a new challenge when he faces former kickboxing champion Rico Verhoeven at the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt.
Speaking to Boxing Scene ahead of the event, Haye believes there is still one big fight left for him to truly secure his legacy.
“If anyone deserves to be able to fight whoever they want to fight, he’s that guy. And I think he should fight this kickboxer, then fight Deontay Wilder, because then on paper, he’s beaten every man of the era.
“In 50 years, looking back, no one will care that Wilder had a life and death against Derek Chisora. No one cares. They just see the name brand there. So Usyk’s fought every dominant champion from his era and reigned supreme, remained unbeaten. I think that’s the only box left to tick.”
Wilder is no longer the fearsome fighter he once was, having lost twice to Tyson Fury, then Joseph Parker and Zhilei Zhang, but got back to winning ways last time out when he beat Derek Chisora over 12 rounds, and Usyk has previously mentioned his interest in fighting ‘The Bronze Bomber.’
