These two outspoken characters clash in Las Vegas on Saturday for the WBC welterweight title in what will be Benn’s first fight at this level.
The best wins of his career have come in his last two fights when he beat an ageing and weight-drained Chris Eubank Jr on points to avenge his loss in the first fight, and then a points win over former champion Regis Prograis in April.
He has to make the 147lbs welterweight limit for the first time since 2022, which many think will be a problem for Benn given that he has twice fought up at 160lbs since then.
Speaking to Fight Hub TV, Garcia thinks that Benn is already using that as a way out should he lose.
“Oh, one million per cent [he’s making excuses]. He already set it up. You already heard him say this is my last fight at 147. Who wants to become a champion then leave the division? Bro is making excuses.
“He’s not going to become a champion but I’m saying who would do that. It makes no sense unless you’re setting an excuse. He could have kept those comments to himself. He didn’t have to say that.”
Although Benn has a hard weight cut to make, he will not be restricted by any rehydration clauses on the day of the fight, so he will be free to come in at whatever weight works for him.
Garcia claimed the WBC belt with a points win over Mario Barrios in February so is well accustomed to making weight and carries plenty of speed and power in the division.
