David Haye thinks there are plenty of great fights out there for Filip Hrgovic following his impressive victory over Moses Itauma.
Hrgovic is the newly crowned IBF heavyweight champion of the world, having defeated 21-year-old fellow challenger Itauma via ninth round stoppage this past weekend.
Despite taking plenty of big shots from almost the first bell until the fight ended, Hrgovic proved his toughness and stood tall long enough for Itauma to tire.
The Croatian then began to land enough of his own blows that his opponent was left completely spent and unable to stay on his feet, forcing the referee to step in and call a halt to proceedings.
It was a win few saw coming, and speaking to Seconds Out, former world champion Haye got excited about Hrgovic’s career going forward, including a rematch with the only man to have beaten him.
“I think Agit Kabayel, beautiful fight. Daniel Dubois, who wouldn’t want to see a rematch there, it was a good fight, Hrgovic said he wasn’t well before that fight; he was sick, he was injured, he didn’t train, he had a whole load of excuses after, so maybe things were terrible.
“Outside of that fight he has won every fight, so that for me, is the most natural fight to make. A rematch, two new heavyweight champions, let’s make it happen; that would be a great fight. I think all these fights are very even fights; I don’t see one person that’s so head and shoulders above the other. I am unsure who would win what fight.”
The first thing Hrgovic will have to do is defend his strap against Frank Sanchez, who accepted step-aside money to allow the contest with Itauma to take place but will now want his rightful shot. After that, unification bouts with Kabayel for Dubois could await.
