John Fury Names The Fight When Tyson Fury Should Have Stopped Boxing

John Fury has always been honest when assessing his son Tyson’s career.

Tyson Fury has had plenty of ups and downs over the last 15 years, including his impressive first world title win when he beat reigning champion Wladimir Klitschko on away soil in Germany in 2015, but then spent a couple of years out battling mental health demons and addiction issues.

His return was a triumphant one as it led to an epic trilogy with Deontay Wilder that saw ‘The Gypsy King win two of the three fights and draw the other before going on to beat the likes of Dillian Whyte and Derek Chisora.

Speaking to Playbook Boxing, ‘Big John’ was asked if he had changed his mind since saying earlier in the year that his son’s legs had gone.

“Nah, he should have stopped, he should have stopped. You can push that boat out too far, and at some point it’ll sink. What I said to him stick to the game plan we had. Lucky enough win a world title, defend it a few times, make a few million quid and leave it.

“Walk away ahead. We knew he could beat Dillian Whyte, we know he could beat Chisora, but when he fought Francis Ngannou, that sealed the deal for me. No more, I told him that, I said forget it from here on.”

Fury was put down by former UFC heavyweight champion Ngannou but managed to get through and win on points, and then lost back-to-back fights with Oleksandr Usyk and spent a year out of the ring.

He has fought twice this year, beating low-ranked opponents Arslanbek Makhmudov and Mariusz Wach, and is now eight weeks away from a showdown with Anthony Joshua at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium.
