Roy Jones Jr Says There Is Only One Way Tyson Fury Becomes Champion Again

Roy Jones Jr has been speaking about the possibility of Tyson Fury regaining a heavyweight crown.

Fury’s first world title shot came back in 2015 when he travelled to Germany to take on the then-long reigning champion Wladimir Klitschko, a noted knockout artist who had ruled over the division with an iron fist.

‘The Gypsy King’ went into the contest as the underdog but after unsettling his opponent with all sorts of antics ahead of the first belt, he put on a disciplined boxing display that mixed up solid offence with secure defence and got his hand raised after 12 rounds.

After that, he took time out to battle mental health demons, then came back and worked his way towards becoming a two-time champion by drawing with Deontay Wilder, then knocking him out in their next two matches.

He retained the WBC strap until he was beaten on points by Oleksandr Usyk not once, but twice, which led him to retire in January 2025.

Speaking to Grosvenor Casinos, boxing legend Jones suggested Fury could win another belt but only if it wasn’t in a fight with his former foe.

“Does Fury win the world title again? It depends on who you get it from. If it’s somebody outside of Usyk, yeah, he wins another world title. If it’s Usyk, maybe not, but anybody else outside of Usyk, it’s very possible.”

Fury made a successful comeback early in April when he defeated Ardlanbek Makmuhdov with a solid 12-round showing. He has now said the only fight he is interested in is a showdown with fellow Brit and long-time rival Anthony Joshua.
