Roy Jones Jr Hails ‘The Most Exciting Heavyweight Since Mike Tyson’

Boxing legend Roy Jones Jr has named who he thinks is the most exciting new star of heavyweight boxing.

Jones held multiple world championships in four weight classes, having moved from middleweight all the way up to heavyweight via super middleweight and light heavyweight, which is why he is considered one of the best of all time.

He beat the likes of Felix Trinidad, Jeff Lacey and John Ruiz and finished with a record of 66 wins from 75 fights, whilst in the meantime he also had an exhibition with Mike Tyson in November 2020 that ended as a draw.

Tyson is generally regarded as one of the most exciting heavyweights to ever do it, given that he knocked out so many of his first opponents and was a world champion by 19 years of age.

Speaking to Grosvenor Casinos, Jones Jr was asked for his views on the young Moses Itauma. Who has been chasing similar records to ‘Iron Mike.’

“Is Moses Itauma the most exciting heavyweight since Mike Tyson? Right now, yes, I think he is. He’s got the explosive punching power that Mike Tyson had; if you can hit them before they hit you, most of the time you’re going to knock them out.

“That’s what Mike did. Mike hit them before they hit him, and he got them out, because he was so explosive. So if he can do that, he will knock out most of the heavyweights, but with Usyk, he’s a little bit hard to hit.

“Moses gives all the heavyweights a hard time. You can’t say he beats them until you put them in front of them, because you haven’t really seen him get cracked yet, but the only one I see that gives him the biggest problem is Usyk.”

It’s clear to see why Jones feels this way, as Itauma has won all 14 of his first fights, 12 by KO and the majority of them inside the first two rounds.

Last time out he was the first man to stop Jermaine Franklin, having knocked him out inside five rounds, which is something that both Anthony Joshua and Dillian Whyte failed to do.

He is now being linked with a big fight in the summer before a potential world title shot after that.
