These two Mexicans first met in January 2017 and it was an absolute war in Indio, California. Close on the cards going into round 11, Mexico City’s Francisco Vargas had been cut to shreds and was stopped on his feet. With victory came the WBC title carried into their fight by Merida’s Miguel Berchelt.

Berchelt has since defended four times, with only Takashi Miura – who Vargas had unseated to win the belt – going the distance. Vargas has been less active but won his two fights since, both inside schedule, albeit via technical decision and a retirement.

Undercard highlights

Another intriguing rematch, this one of the immediate nature, pits WBO super-bantamweight king Emanuel Navarrete of Mexico City against the man he took the belt from, Isaac Dogboe (pronounced ‘dog-bae’), a London-based Ghanaian who was tipped for big things before he fell to the Navarrete in New York in December. It was relatively close that night, but Dogboe took something of a beating and will need to change his strategy to even the score.
