Johnny Nelson has weighed in on the latest about Anthony Joshua’s upcoming fight with Tyson Fury.
This heavyweight showdown has been one that the boxing public has wanted to see for arguably over a decade. Both men are British stars; both have been world champions who have put on hugely impressive displays in the past, but both have so far avoided one another for various reasons.
At this stage in their careers, they seem perfectly matched – both are heading towards 40 with their best years behind them, both have lost twice to Oleksandr Usyk, neither of them has a world title and both have had a couple of warm-up fights this year following losses.
Although the fight has been announced for December 11 in Cardiff at the Principality Stadium, there has been fresh doubts cast with comments made by those involved.
Speaking to That Boxing Show, Nelson admitted he is still not convinced this huge fight will happen.
“I said for a while this fight ain’t happen. I’ve said it for years. We were in touching distance for years, then it fell to pieces again. It’s like being teased by a lover. Then you get there and think I’ve done everything you said and they say ‘nah I’m not interested.’
“This is that fight, they get so drawn in, you’ve almost got me and then boom, walk away, this is what’s happening now. Unless I hear it come out of ‘AJ’s mouth and Fury’s mouth on the same day, at the same time, I’m not having it.”
Fury has claimed that Joshua and his promoter Eddie Hearn are trying to pull out of the fight over contractual discrepancies, though neither of them has yet commented publicly.
