The long-running drama surrounding Anthony Joshua vs Tyson Fury could finally be about to come to an end with a new location named as the frontrunner.
The contest has been close to being signed all summer, but the major stumbling block has been the location. Joshua and his team are hoping to host the fight in the UK, while broadcaster Netflix and promoter Turki Alalshikh have been pushing for New York so as to catch the largest possible audience from around the world.
Fury has teased that he has walked away by calling out Oleksandr Usyk in recent days, but there is no bigger fight for him than ‘AJ’ and a legacy-defining showdown between the two former two-time world champions.
Both are approaching 40 and are in a similar place in their career, with no belts, not long left in their careers, and no better opportunity for a huge payday than by fighting each other.
A post on X from boxing journalist Dan Rafael suggests a new venue is now the most likely location for the fight.
“BREAKING: Per sources involved, there is a strong chance #JoshuaFury will indeed take place in the UK at Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales, on Nov. 28. Capacity 80k+ & has retractable roof. Asked if Netflix was now OK with the move one source said, “I think they’re OK.” Whatever happens was told it would be resolved next couple of days. #boxing”
Joshua has already fought twice at the Principality Stadium, first stopping Carlos Takam in 2017 to defend his WBA (Super), IBF and IBO heavyweight championships, before defending the same straps against Joseph Parker with his first 12-round points win the following year.
