KSI vs Logan Paul 2: A 5-STEP survival guide for real boxing fans

It has not so much crept up on us as rumbled closer like an articulated lorry, the glare of its lights and sounds of its cargo becoming more obtrusive until you are forced to either embrace it or get the flip out of the way. Yes, KSI vs Logan Paul 2, the rematch between a pair of YouTubers that will host two actual world title fights on its undercard at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, is almost upon us and I felt a duty to provide the following survival guide for hardcore boxing fans, for whom this ‘contest’ is anathema, to get through Saturday night.

 

1. Watch recent classics
Amid all the doom and gloom of this pantomime being a frightening harbinger of similar or worse to come, it seems an apt time to remind ourselves how boxing, real boxing, is booming and producing brilliant fights on a regular basis. So while Sky are taking with one hand – Sky Sports Box Office will broadcast KSI vs Logan Paul 2 – they do give back with the other, namely their On Demand service. Treat yourself this Saturday night to proper boxing, thanks to Regis Proigrais vs Josh Taylor, Robbie Davies Jr vs Lewis Ritson and Canelo vs Sergey Kovalev.

 

2. Drink copiously

To paraphrase The Eagles. ‘Some drink to remember, some drink to forget.’ And boy do we want to forget what is going on in LA in the small hours. So pick your favourite tipple and get as leathered as you feel comfortable with. It won’t stop the fight happening on such a grand stage, of course, but it may just dull the pain and wipe out the memory.

 

3. Record and mute
I do have sympathy with those who want to watch title defences from Billy Joe Saunders and Devin Haney but resent paying Box Office prices – albeit at a reduced rate of £9.95 – for a six-round main event between two debutants. I would strongly advise recording the show, rather than watch it live. It’s not as if there is much doubt over the results in the Haney and Saunders contests, so spoilers are not the danger they usually are. That way you can fast forward through all the KSI vs Logan Paul 2 hype and vignettes and just watch the real fights, as if they are existing on a vacuum, in a separate show. If that is not a sufficiently comprehensive level of denial, then go a step further by muting the recording, thus eliminating any talk of the headline act from the announcers and the hint of ‘casual’ from the audience.

 

4. Sleep
Hardcore boxing fans have something of a love-hate relationship with sleep. We get up in the middle of the night to watch boxing, sit there bleary-eyed trying to concentrate, then struggle to return to a peaceful slumber afterwards. Or, worse still, we figure we’ll ‘iron man’ it, go all the way through, bell to bell, only to get stopped in the championship rounds, say 5am, just before the reason for such fortitude is due to start. So take this as a free pass, there is boxing on across the Atlantic but we don’t need to watch it live. Embrace the opportunity to get a full eight hours or more and feel fresh as a daisy, for once, on a Sunday morning. Obviously this cannot be guaranteed if you also adhere to Tip No. 2.

 

5. Look to the future
It’s not quite starry but next week sees a Hennessy Sports show on terrestrial TV (Channel 5) and one of the domestic Fights of the Year, in Kash Farooq vs Lee McGregor, live worldwide via IFL. Good, honest, down-to-earth boxing that will wipe away the sour taste from this week’s farce. Looking even further into the future we have Deontay Wilder vs Luis Ortiz 2, Callum Smith vs John Ryder and, of course, Andy Ruiz vs Anthony Joshua 2, all on the horizon. We can see this weekend’s event as a momentary blip on an otherwise captivating landscape.
