David Price has admitted that his one dream matchup in the squared circle never came off.

Liverpudlian heavyweight Price was a big hitter who won a bronze medal at the 2008 Olympics and went on to hold the British and Commonwealth titles from 2012 to 2013.

Two years later, Price challenged for the European title but lost to Erkan Teper and over the next four years suffered losses to Christian Hammer and Alexander Povetkin before beating Kash Ali and Dave Allen in 2019. In his final fight later that same year, he was stopped by Derek Chisora.

Speaking to The Football Historian Podcast, Price admitted that Tyson Fury is the one he always wanted to fight.

“Tyson Fury. That was always the dream, to fight him. Tyson Fury, no doubt about it. That was the one fight that got away, really. He was British champion when I became mandatory to fight for the British title and he vacated rather than fight me.

“But at that time, it was the right thing for him to do. He had the right people around him, the right guidance, because I think at that time, I’d have beat him. I was firing. He was just getting by in his fights, he was clumsy and getting hurt. It’s all about timing.

“He went on to bigger and better things. I’m not saying now I’d beat him, but at that time I would have. He got handled right.
The Anfield Tyson Fury thing was always the dream in my head and it never happen.”

Fury went from British level all the way to the top, first becoming unified champion when he defeated Wladimir Klitschko in 2015, then WBC ruler after drawing with, then twice beating, Deontay Wilder.

He lost his belts to Oleksandr Usyk but fights for the WBA title in December when he finally faces off with fellow British star Anthony Joshua in Cardiff.
