Now that the dust has settled on Conor Benn‘s loss to Ryan Garcia, questions are being asked about what he does next.

Benn was stopped inside two rounds when he stepped up for his maiden world title bout. Many had wondered if he would struggle at the weight given that it has been four years since he last fought at welterweight and that did seem to take its toll.

He had previously been up at 160lbs to fight Chris Eubank Jr, losing the first, then winning the rematch seven months later.

Speaking to Total Boxing with Tris Dixon, Benn’s trainer Tony Sims laid out what Benn will do in the immediate future.

“I think he’s going to have a break. He’s had four back-to-back camps. They was all big fights and he needs to have a rest from boxing, physically and mentally, he needs to have a bit of time away from it and then he needed to decide what he wants to do.”

Sims was then asked if he was sure Benn would return to the ring.

“That’s his decision; it’s not my decision what he does next, it’s totally up to him but he needs to have some time away from boxing for a while and gather his thoughts and what he does next.

“He’s messed around with his weight, going up two divisions and coming down two divisions so his body needs to come away from it to protect himself.”

There will likely always be the option of a rubber match with Eubank, especially now that Eubank has been seen back in the gym training. Though one thing is for sure, Benn will not fight down at the welterweight limit again, and is more likely to fight at 160 lbs or higher.
