The winner of the impending rematch between Daniel Dubois and Fabio Wardley could be in line to face one of the sport’s most exciting heavyweight contenders.
The British heavyweight duo produced one of the best fights of this year when they locked horns for the WBO world heavyweight title at the Co-Op Live Arena in Manchester last month.
Wardley started the domestic clash very impressively as he floored Dubois in rounds 1 and 3, with many believing the Ipswich-native was on course to make the first defence of his world title in style.
Dubois brushed the knockdowns off, however, and gained control of the bout going into the later rounds before he eventually stopped Wardley in the 11th to become a two-time heavyweight champion.
With the hard-hitting duo set to meet in a rematch later this year, as per Wardley’s contract, promoter Frank Warren has revealed there is a chance that Moses Itauma could face the winner.
In an interview with Seconds Out, Warren confirmed Itauma will return to the ring at the end of August before revealing that the 21-year-old star may be offered the opportunity to face the winner of Dubois vs. Wardley.
“Moses will be fighting on the 29th of August, that’s the intention. We’ll see what happens there, we’re working on a couple of things, so hopefully we’ll be in a position to announce that one again soon. You know, he’s unbelievable, all the things that he’s done and I’m sure there’s some great fights to be made between him and maybe the winner of that fight.”
Itauma established himself as the number one challenger to the WBO heavyweight title back in March when he became the first man to stop America’s Jermaine Franklin in the 5th round of their bout in Manchester. The frontrunner for his August opponent remains Filip Hrgovic.
