Daniel Dubois put on a fine display to beat Fabio Wardley, and now Frank Bruno has given his view on the stoppage.
‘DDD” found himself under heavy fire almost as soon as the first bell went, and was put down inside the opening 10 seconds of round one.
In round three, he was put down once more, but after that, Wardley had much less success with the same huge overhand rights. Instead, Dubois gathered himself and began to land both jabs and his own right hands, which slowly but surely broke down the now former WBO world champion.
With a bloodied nose and depleted energy reserves, he was eventually stopped early in the 11th round, though he did well to never hit the canvas.
In a new post on X, Bruno gave his view on the fight, including high praise for Dubois, but also a note on whether to not the stoppage was timed right.
“Afternoon, my office reminded me of predictions I made about Daniel in 2019 (I’ll let you look them up!) Well last nights fight—– It was an epic war, I’m not sure I have seen such a… well words escape me… Heroic, magnificent, glorious, legendary, fight in years.
“I did feel the fight should have been stopped possibly earlier but what a fight I am glad Daniel listened to all my advice over the years, he he!!
“His dad I met many years ago when we both used to go roller skating who told me about his amazing son who one day would be a world champion boxer. I laughed when I saw his dad still giving fatherly advice in no uncertain terms!!’
Many others have agreed with Bruno that the referee could well have called the fight off a round or two earlier, including, Wardley’s own cornerman Ben Davison.
