Roy Jones Jr shied away from no one and once even called out one of the heavyweight division’s greatest ever talents.
Jones held multiple world championships in four weight classes from 1989 to 2023, all after ending his amateur career with a silver medal in the Olympic Games.
He won titles at middleweight, super middleweight, light heavyweight, and heavyweight, making him the first and only boxer to move up from junior middleweight and win a title in the banner division.
He was also the undisputed light heavyweight champion who fought the likes of James Toney, Bernard Hopkins, John Ruiz and Antonio Tarver.
In a new clip from Bee About Boxing, Jones Jr is speaking ringside back in his prime and was asked about whether or not he felt a fight with Lennox Lewis was likely.
“You never can tell about guys like that. But remember this, I don’t care who he is, what weight he is, how big he is, I’ll put him on his ass. I would have tore his you know what up.”
At that point, Lewis had just managed to get through a tough fight against young challenger Vitali Klitschko, who was stopped on a terrible cut. The former undisputed champion retained his belts and retired rather than taking a rematch.
Jones fought on for 20 years, ending his record with 66 wins from 76 fights and his reputation intact as one of the greatest of his generation.
He was named Fighter of the Year in 1994 and 2003 and holds the record for the most wins in unified light-heavyweight title bouts in boxing history with 12.
