Canelo Alvarez returns to the ring this weekend against Christian Mbilli, and Johnny Nelson has given his thoughts on how the Mexican will get on.
Canelo is still one of the biggest draws in world boxing, even though he is coming off a loss. Last time out in September 2025, he lost his undisputed super middleweight titles in an engaging fight against multi-weight champion Terence Crawford.
The American became only the third man to beat Canelo in 68 fights after Dmitry Bivol and Floyd Mayweather.
Canelo is now 36 years old and has held multiple world championships from light middleweight to light heavyweight, including unified titles in three of those weight classes.
This weekend, he has the chance to regain one of his old super-middleweight titles for the first time since he became the first man to be undisputed in the division.
Speaking to Boxing King Media, Nelson was asked if Canelo will get another win this weekend.
“I do think he will. Of course he’s not the fighter he was, but he’s now doing it for the money, because he can, he’s got the bug. How long will he go on for? Will he go on too long?”
He takes on Mbilli, who has won 24 of his 29 fights by KO and lost just once. He was elevated to full WBC champion after his split draw with Lester MartÃnez back in September.
Before that, his best win was a points decision over former Gennady Golovkin opponent Sergiy Derevyanchenko in August 2024, so he faces a tough test this weekend, assuming Canelo still has plenty left.
