Roy Jones Jr has had his say on the timing of the stoppage in the epic heavyweight encounter between Fabio Wardley and Daniel Dubois.
Wardley was making the maiden defence of his WBO belt, having been elevated to full champion following his knockout win over Joseph Parker. Dubois, meanwhile, was returning at the highest level to become a two-time world champion, having previously held the IBF belt, which he defended against Anthony Joshua but lost to Oleksandr Usyk last summer.
It was a brutal fight that saw ‘DDD’ put down twice in the first three rounds but eventually get a foothold and batter Wardley until the 11th round when the fight was stopped.
Jones was asked by Seconds Out whose responsibility it is to save a fighter from unnecessary punishment.
“Everybody. Really, the corner first. They’re the closest person to him. The doctor ain’t know him. They know him, they know what kind of person he is, what he can endure, what he can’t endure. They know him personally. So it’s their job first, I think he. Took a little too much personally but, yes, but it’s boxing.”
Wardley has now officially activated his rematch clause, with Queenberry Promotions confirming that the second fight will take place before the end of the year.
