Tragic Hugo Santillan the second boxer to die this week

Argentine super-feather Hugo Santillan has died, aged just 23, as a result of injuries sustained in his last fight

It continues to be a dark week for boxing. Following the boxing-related death of Maxim Dadashev two days ago, another fighter has tragically lost his life in pursuit of boxing glory. That Argentine lightweight Hugo Santillan was only 23 when he died earlier today only exacerbates the sense of cruel waste.

Santillan collapsed following his gruelling 10-round draw with Uruguay’s Eduardo Abreu on Saturday night in Buenos Aires. Santillan, 19-6-2 (8), was admitted to hospital and underwent emergency surgery for a blood clot on the brain. With his brain continuing to swell and the subsequent pressure on other organs leading to successive kidney failure, Santillan never regained consciousness.

Seconds Out extends its heartfelt condolences to Santillan’s family.
