12 rounds of dominance: Vasiliy Lomachenko defeats Richard Commey

Former lightweight world champion Vasiliy Lomachenko won a wide 12-round unanimous decision over Richard Commey at Madison Square Garden in New York City Saturday night.

Scores were 117-110 and 119-108 twice.

Lomachenko, a southpaw, jabbed and studied in the opening round. Commey feinted and searched for range. Lomachenko scored to the body.

Commey, with a reach advantage of over five inches, returned the favor to the midsection. Lomachenko, bobbing, and weaving, connected with a left to the jaw at the bell.

Lomachenko (16-2, 11 KOs) stepped inside with a left in round two. He fired jabs. The slightly taller Commey landed a shot to the midsection. Lomachenko turned Commey and connected. Both fighters landed blows. A big overhand left at the bell wobbled Commey. Lomachenko,33, landed a combination and popped Commey with jabs during round three. Commey (30-4, 27 KOs) cracked Lomachenko’s belly and cuffed Lomachenko on the inside. Lomachenko stepped to the right and landed a three-punch combination. A straight left also scored.

Commey met Lomachenko in the center of the ring with jabs in round four. Lomachenko moved to his left and fired punches - landing three uppercuts.

Lomachenko, a three-division champion, feinted and bobbed in round five. He waited to counter - landing two solid lefts. Commey, a native of Ghana, was short with jabs and ran into a left. Lomachenko continued to get off first in round six. Commey forced Lomachenko into the ropes. Lomachenko clipped Commey with fast left hands.

In round seven, Commey connected with two shots. Lomachenko worked his left. A big short left deposited Commey on his back. The former champion barely beat the count. Lomachenko wobbled him with a variety of shots. Commey fought back bravely and somehow survived the round. Commey came out punching in round eight.

Lomachenko connected with a straight left. Commey fired punches in round nine, Lomachenko blocked them. Lomachenko slipped in and out and fired scoring punches. Commey missed a right and ate a left. The elusive Lomachenko connected with five shots to the body and head in round 10. Commey fired back, but Lomachenko connected with a combination. Lomachenko tagged Commey with blows to the head.

There was no quit in Commey. Lomachenko knocked Commey back with six shots to the head and body. Lomachenko landed various combinations in the 12th and final round.

Commey swung and missed. Lomachenko didn’t. He unleashed hard shots before Commey knew what hit him.

A left knocked Commey back.

Lomachenko’s dominance was complete.
