Kambosos, Jr. Off To A Flyer On US Debut

By Stephen Tobey: MASHANTUCKET, Conn. – In his United States debut, George Kambosos, Jr. of Sydney, Australia, stopped Jose Forero of San Francisco, Panama in the first round of a scheduled 10-round junior welterweight bout at Foxwoods Resort Casino on Saturday, May 5.

Kambosos (14-0, 8 knockouts), dropped Foereo twice in the first 90 seconds, both with right hands. After a solid left hook and another right uppercut, referee Michael Ortega stopped the fight at 1 minute and 48 seconds.

“I wanted to make a statement,” said Kambosos.

Forero dropped to 13-7-1 (11).

Kambosos, who will return home to Australia after the fight, plans to keep fighting in the U.S.

“I have probably the biggest fan base in Australia,” he said, “but I want to fight in America. It’s where all the big fights are. This is the first step.”

Shelly Vincent of Providence, R.I. won a 10-round majority decision against Edina Kiss of Budapest, Hungary in a junior lightweight bout. Robert Paolino and Frank Lombardi scored it 100-90. Glen Feldman scored it 95-95. Vincent improved to 22-1 (1); Kiss dropped to 14-7 (8).

Mykquan Williams of East Hartford, Conn. Won the vacant WBC-USNBC Silver super lightweight title with a first-round stoppage of Orlando Felix of Toa Baja, Puerto Rico in a scheduled eight-round bout. Williams dropped Felix with an overhand right to the head after eight unanswered punches. After Felix got up and the action resumed, Williams landed another left hook. Felix stumbled back toward the ropes and referee Mike Ortega stopped the fight at 2:22. Williams is 11-0 (7); Felix dropped to 12-2-1 (4).

In a battle of undefeated welterweights from Massachusetts, Adrian Sosa of Lawrence won a six-round majority decision against Khiry Todd of Lynn. Robert Paolino scored it 59-55 and Frank Lombardi scored it 58-56. John McKaie scored the fight 57-57. Sosa is now 7-0 (5); Todd is 7-1 (5).

Bakhodir Jalolov of Miami won his pro debut, stopping Hugo Trujilo of Mexico City, Mexico in the third round of a scheduled six at heavyweight. Jakolov dropped Trujilo with two left uppercuts. Trujilo got up, but stumbled. Referee Michael Ortega caught him and stopped the fight at 1:14 of the third. Jakolov also knocked down Trujilo in the second with a left uppercut. Trujilo dropped to 4-1-1 (2).

Khalid Twaiti of Brooklyn, N.Y. knocked out Joseph Cole of Marrero, La. in the third round of a scheduled four at junior featherweight. Twaiti dropped Cole with a left hook to the chin in the third and Shade Murdaugh stopped the fight without a count 35 seconds into the round. Twaiti also knocked down Cole in the second with a left hook. Twaiti is now 3-0 (2); Cole is 1-6 (1).

Middleweight Lamont Powell of Pawtucket, R.I. debuted with a four-round unanimous decision against Amaden Cristiano of Boston. All three judges scored it 40-35. Cristiano (0-2) had a point deducted in the fourth round for holding and hitting.

Irvin Gonzalez, Jr. of Worcester, Mass. knocked out Jonathan Perez of Barranquilla, Colombia in the third round of a scheduled six at junior lightweight. Gonzalez (10-0, 9 KO s) dropped Perez with a left hook to the side. Referee Shade Murdaugh reached the count of 10 at 42 seconds. Perez dropped to 37-21 (29).

Debuting junior welterweight Davhon Shelton of Pawtucket, R.I. won a four-round unanimous decision against Carlos Galindo of Woburn, Mass. All three judges scored it 39-37. Galindo dropped to 0-3.

Hurshidbek Normtov of Brooklyn, N.Y. outpointed Ronald Montes of Barranquilla, Colombia in a sx-round middleweight bout All three judges scored it 60-54 for Normatov (6-0, 2 KO s); Montes dropped to 18-9 (16).
