Dave Allen has given his honest opinion on Tyson Fury‘s warm-up fight with Mariusz Wach.
Fury has decided to take one more contest ahead of his much-anticipated but as yet unconfirmed fight with Anthony Joshua later this year.
He was last out in April when he soundly beat Arslanbek Makhmudov on points following more than a year out of the ring after his back-to-back defeats to Oleksandr Usyk.
The fight with Wach will take place in Thailand on July 24, but it has come in for some criticism from fans, given that the Polish fighter has won just three of his past 10 bouts.
Speaking to Pro Boxing Fans, Allen was asked for his view on the fight.
“I guessed it right. I thought there would be a fight in Thailand but I didn’t anticipate it would be Mariusz Wach. If the Joshua fight is to happen, I guess there has to be no risk but people won’t like him fighting Wach.
“But if he goes on to fight Joshua and beats him, no one will care about this. I don’t think it’s a great PR move for here and now but if he thinks it’s going to do some good leading into a big fight with Joshua, then that’s up to him.”
He was then asked if Wach could cause any problems at all to Fury.
“No, I imagine it will be reminiscent of heavy bag work.”
Wach challenged for the WBA, IBF, WBO and IBO titles in 2012 but was beaten on points by Wladimir Klitschko and has also lost to the likes of Dillian Whyte, Frazer Clarke and Moses Itauama, who beat him inside two rounds in July 2024.
In all, Wach has lost 13 of his 52 fights and is now 46 years old, so is likely to provide very little opposition for Fury just one day before Joshua makes his comeback on 25 July against Kristian Prenga in Jeddah.
