George Groves has suggested it is now time for one of British boxing’s biggest stars to hang up the gloves for good.
Groves is a former world champion who shot to fame more than a decade ago when he was involved in two of the biggest fights British boxing had seen for some time.
Both were fights with his supermiddleweight rival Carl Froch, and both ended in stoppage losses for ‘The Saint’, though many believe the first fight was ended much too prematurely.
After that, he rebuilt and eventually won a world title by stopping Fedor Chudinov in 2015 before going on to fight and beat Jamie Cox and Chris Eubank Jr in defence of his WBA title.
Speaking to Boxing UK about Eubank Jr, he suggested he should walk away from the sport.
“Chris Eubank Jr apparently, is coming back. That guy, he’s the opposite of Fury; he should be retiring, rather than time and time again retiring and then coming back.”
Groves’ last fight was the final of the World Boxing Super Series and ended with a seventh-round stoppage loss to Callum Smith. At that point, he hung up his gloves, having struggled to get fit for the final following a dislocated shoulder in the previous fight with Eubank.
Last time out, Eubank Jr was beaten on points by long-time rival Conor Benn. He was put down twice early in the fight, and many believe he was weight-drained after competing below his natural weight twice in order to make the fights with Benn.
Since then, he has become a father to twins but has vowed to make a ring return later this year.
