After a brief sparring session, Shawn Porter has an inside take on how Conor Benn might fare against Ryan Garcia.
This has been a much-talked-about fight of late, with Benn calling out Garcia many times since his rematch win over Chris Eubank Jr late last year.
Benn has yet to fight for a world title, and the win over his generational rival was his biggest to date, but he is now working his way back down to his natural 147 division after fighting as high as 160 against Eubank.
Speaking to Boxing King Media, Porter believes Garcia could have the edge in this fight.
“I think that fight, based off of how Ryan Garcia just looked in his last fight, looks like he beats Conor Benn. Conor has a style that matches what Ryan is good at. The style clash favours Ryan because of his speed. His power off the outside, definitely a tough fight for Benn.
“Based off of Ryan’s last fight, Ryan Garcia wins that fight 60-40, possibly KO. But Conor is very, very tough. That’s what I already knew about him but I got to see it when we sparred. He’s much more versatile than we saw in the first fight
We see the speed, the foot movement, things of that nature. Those are the things I saw sparring him, just four easy rounds, which let me know that he could beat Chris. The first fight he was just hyped up.”
Last time out, Benn beat an ageing Regis Prograis at 150lbs, while Garcia has had two world title fights at welterweight. The first he lost to Rolly Romero, the second he won when he beat Mario Barrios on the cards back in February, so he presents a stern test for Benn.
Rumours are that the fight could take place in Las Vegas later this year.
